Post-Impressionism
In one manner, Post-Impressionism was an extension of the Impressionistic artistic movement. In another manner, it was a rejection of Impressionistic limitations and rules. Most Post-impressionistic works originated from France (except those from van Gogh, who was indeed Dutch). Nearly all Post-Impressionist artists including van Gogh began their artistic career as Impressionists, but each of them abandoned the style, however, to form his own highly personal art. While Impressionism was based on the objective recording of nature with color and light, Post-Impressionism derived out of the same color while breaking free of the chains of rules and guidelines of the arts, seeing creations with short brushstrokes of broken, yet brilliant and bright color.

Christ and Buddha - Paul Ranson

Ranson compares the Crucifixion of Christ and the Awakening of Buddha, providing a combination of warm and cool colors to withhold the emotion of the two figures. While this painting saw a small amount of controversy from European Christians, there were many who were interested in the cultures of Asia that praised Ranson for his combination of cultures.

One of several self-portraits of van Gogh, this is a smoother variant of Post-Impressionistic artwork that does not consist of the unorganized large brushing. van Gogh apparently loved himself quite a bit; how ironic considering his end.

Schoolboy - Vincent van Gogh

This kid doesn't look like he's having a good time. Van Gogh concentrated on his facial expression rather than any background or surroundings. Most Post-Impressionism like this didn't really work. Just look at his face.
